Literati: Ficus (bunjin) Empty
PostSubject: Literati: Ficus (bunjin)   Literati: Ficus (bunjin) EmptySun Dec 26, 2010 1:04 pm

i was trying to try some hands on Literati style since few months since i dont have any of it. Finding good materials for Bonsai here in my area is quite difficult, so i have tried on a ficus cutting which i planted two years ago. When i prune my plants i dont waste the branches and try to plant them in pots.now i have about 50 pants of ficus (thick less then the pencil) in my home.
i choose this one for literati style, since material is new plant and dont have any experience so bear with me and be nice.

i made the pot my self with paper and cement and will transfer it to bigger pot next year.according to my assessment it will take about ten years to take form of a good tree.
material is very simple i will try to put some bends, curves and twists in next possible styling...suggestions are welcomed. cheers

Very nice... is this Ficus benjamina? How well does it backbud? This tree seems to have nice surface roots.

Here is my positive criticism:
This tree is still very young and needs to gain some taper and girth. I would plant it in a larger pot and don't prune/pinch or shape the tree with wires for a couple years. This will allow the tree to gain strength and thicken the base.

Then once you are satisfied with the size of the trunk, based on how well this tree backbuds, chop it off just above the first branch.

I will try to find articles for you by experts that explain the procedure of trunk development. It should apply to Ficus species.

thanks aman for guidance...really appreciative. i will plant the tree in the ground for couple of years, was just checking the pot i made myself that if can resist the climate and frequent watering.i have three other literati plants of same specimen.
regarding back budding, this plant is very vigorous, but when it bud..it shoots new branches of at least 2 or three inch, making a foliage pad will be interesting job for me.will upload the pics of its budding.

Majed, I like collecting different trees from the wild, and come across very good material for different styles. Bunjin is one my most favourite styles, and the most artistic as well.

Aman has very rightly suggested that your specimen is far too young to apply the styling at this stage. Let is grow for a while so that the trunk is a little thick and hard.

I have a bunjin 'pre-bonsai' that I would post shortly for your viewing and comments.

Majed,

Salam, and thanks for the drawings..... my preference is for option-1.
Although you have said that you don't want a thick stem/trunk, but my suggestion would be to a mature trunk (though not very thick) is vital to create a good Literati bonsai.

Shaukat
