| Hi everyone,
In short, lime sulphur is used to save the deadwood in bonsai from fungus attack. When you create a 'jin' or 'shari' in a bonsai, then the exposed surface is treated with lime sulphur..... to save the exposed branch or stem from fungus attack or rotting.
Farooq has rightly provided the link for details.

| If you wander into the northern parts of Baluchistan and NWFP, you will see lots of trees in the mountain with deadwood. You will find them particularly in Pines, Junipers, and other evergreens.
The natural causes of a branch dieing are numerous: 1. Heavy snow on the branch could snap it at a weaker point on the branch. 2. Disease attacking an already weaker branch (lower branches are weaker than top branches due to the lack of light and wind). 3. Forest fire. 4. Miscellaneous... only God knows exactly why things die.
Over time, the bark on the dead branch erodes from wind and snow revealing the beautiful hard core wood. In some cases, the inner wood bleaches in the sun giving it a nice whitish colour. In other cases, it might have patches and streaks of black, green, and even other colours caused by moss, lichen and fungi growing on it (or dried moss).
Lime Sulphur in bonsai is primarily used to preserve deadwood from rotting, at the same time, it also bleaches the wood giving it a whitish colour that you may find in nature. Some experts add a little bit of ink to give the deadwood natural looking blackish shades.
