Buying a Bonsai - Overseas request Empty
PostSubject: Buying a Bonsai - Overseas request   Buying a Bonsai - Overseas request EmptySun Jan 31, 2010 1:24 am

Someone very dear to me, who lives in Karachi, loves Bonsais. I am in the US. My objective is to find the most beautiful bonsai in Pakistan, purchase it and have it delivered to her. I would greatly appreciate any recommendation on flower stores, or places who may be willing to help me with this. It's very important to me, and I would really appreciate your help.

quiverandquill welcome to Pak Bonsai.
unfortunately there are no regular bonsai nurseries in Pakistan, you can buy it from US and send her to Pakistan.
if you want to learn to make your own bonsai you are most welcome.

I think there is a lot involved in shipping a tree from US. I personally haven't shipped a plant to Pakistan, but I am sceptical that the tree will stay healthy after the shipping process. There is time and handling involved to ship the tree (this includes quarentine time). Who will be looking after your tree in this process and watering it?

Pakistan is filled with great potential throughout. I am originally from Karachi (now in Chicago), and I have seen some really great young ficus (pilkhan, peeple, barr, etc.) trees (not bonsai) that are around 10"+ in trunk diameter. There are other native trees that would make great bonsai (Acacia is one of them).

If you need information on how/when to collect trees, then create a seperate thread. There is a lot to be learned for this process.

Other than high price, a novice won't learn much from just buying a finished tree, and might end up killing it with lack of hands-on experience.

Believe me, most of the enjoyment in having a bonsai is bringing it up to a finished tree. Pruning, wiring, repotting, watering, fertilizing, and watching it change over the seasons is probably the most enjoyable experience than just having a bonsai.

If you want an instant bonsai for instant gratification then buy a bonsai, but if you want a lasting and a growing gratification of bonsai, then enjoy the beauty of it by working on nursery plants, wild raw material, or by air-layering.
